KTM® Motorcycle History 

KTM® began in Austria during the 1930s, though they weren't always a motorcycle manufacturer. Prior to World War II, Kraftfahrzeug Trunkenpolz Mattighofen, or KTM® for short, operated as a vehicle repair shop for automobiles, bikes, and other engine-powered vehicles. Once business dried up during the war, KTM® quickly repurposed its tools and began creating its own brand of motorcycles. Their first commercially mass-produced bike prototype was called the R100 and debuted in 1951 to moderate success.

Their successes on the motorcycle manufacturing trail really peaked during the 1960s and even led to expansion throughout the United States by 1978. Despite corporate reshuffling and a split of the companies' products, KTM® has managed to maintain a reputation for creating some of the most durable, powerful, and all-purpose motorcycles on the market in both Europe and America for the past 50 years.

AMA Supercross Championship

One of the main areas where KTM® found initial success was on the Supercross racetrack. Since most of their models are built with Supercross in mind, you'll traditionally find sleeker, more simple designs that are built to reach optimum performance at high speeds. This has cemented KTM® as a standard-bearer in the racing world, which began with their bikes' performance in the first Motocross World Championship win in 1974. Their competition-ready and championship-winning motorcycles are generally designed with their signature orange, black, and silver company colors to make them instantly recognizable while they are on the race track.
